Day 1: Welcome to Iceland!

Arrival at Keflavik airport...

Scoop up the rental car and hit the road!

• Cross the lava field of Reykjanes towards Reykjavik

• Feast at the Hlemmur Food hall before departing the city

• Heading north, turn into the beautiful fjord of Hvalfjordur, once the center of whaling in Iceland

• Perhaps take on the challenging hike to the highest waterfall in Iceland, the 600ft Glymur

• Rejoin road #1 and continue to the fjord of Borgarfjordur

Day 2: Rock giants and the Atlantic Sea

• Start your day by enjoying a hike along the crater rim of Grábrók

Cross the Holtavorduheidi pass to the town of Hvammstangi. This small community offers the best opportunity to observe seals and marine birds in Iceland

• Stop for lunch in Hvammstangi

Visit the Seal Museum and Kidka Wool Factory

• Next up, the Vatnsnes peninsula and Svalbard beach on road #711 


Day 3: Skagastrond lighthouses and pool of Grett

• From Blönduós, hit the path less traveled, and go around the peninsula of Skagastrond by road #745

• Head towards the Trollaskagi peninsula and through the town of Hofsós

Go for a dip in Hofsós, arguably offering the most spectacular view of any pool in Iceland

• Arrive at the fishing village of Siglufjordur. The beautiful waterfront hotel and excellent restaurants make it ideal for a pit stop

Day 4:  Highlights of the north

• Enjoy the tranquility and serenity of the countryside as you head towards Akureyri

• Stroll down the main street of Hafnarstræti or enjoy a dip at the excellent geothermal pool

Visit the botanical gardens just outside of the town center

• Drive east and stop at Laufás museum to witness the charming turf-house style of architecture

• Then, why not add a horse riding tour from Skjaldarvík


Day 5: Ásbyrgi canyon and Fjallahöfn black sand beach

• Start your morning in Húsavik with your choice of: whale watching, sea kayaking, puffing spotting, or hiking up Húsavíkurfjall

• Continue to Jokulsarlgljufur National Park and Asbyrgi Canyon

• Explore Fjallahöfn black sand beach (Ideal at low-tide)

• Finally, visit the Arctic Henge, a massive stone sundial, en route to Raufarhöfn


Day 6:  Discovering the North-East

• Head towards Langanes peninsula, passing through small communities like Þórshöfn and Bakkfjörður

Hike the Rauðanes rock formations

Check out a great viewpoint at the end of Langanes road

•  Push on towards Egilstadir through traditional fishing villages of Vopnafjordur and Bakkafjordur


Day 7: Iceland´s most remote regions

• Drive across Fjardarheidi mountain pass to the beautiful town of Seydisfjordur

•  Find the hiking trails around Vestdalsfossar waterfalls

• Follow road #94 to enter one of Iceland´s most remote regions and the village of Bakkagerði

• Traverse the Vatnskarð pass and marvel at Dyrfjöll mountains, Iceland´s most impressive mountains


Day 8:  Dettifoss waterfall and Lake Mývatn

• Head towards Akureyri and cross the volcanic landscape of Möðrudalur

• Experience to the most powerful waterfall in Europe, the mammoth Dettifoss

Feel the ground tremble as massive amounts of glacier meltwater come tumbling down into the ravine below

• Explore the stunning Lake Myvatnsulfurous mud pools and powerful steam vents

• Have a walk along the crater rim of Lake Viti, situated in the bowl of a dormant volcano 


Day 9: The countryside

• A quiet day on the road ahead as you head back towards Reykjavik

• In Varmahlid, join a horse riding tour through fertile farmlands

• Or, feed your adventurous spirit with a whitewater rafting tour on a glacier river


Day 10: Snæfellsnes Peninsula

• Hit the road towards the Snæfellsnes peninsula

• Explore the charming town of Stykkisholmur, known for it ́s colorful houses

• Taste fermented shark - a local delicacy at museum at Bjarnarhofn

• Practice your photography skills at Kirkjufell, the most photographed mountain in Iceland

• Visit the black sand beach of Djúpalónsandur, and the stunning rock formations of Lóndrangar


Day 11: Return to Reykjavik

• Depart your hotel and drive towards Borgarnes and Reykjavik

• For a bit of wildlife, walk from Ytri-Tunga to the beach to find one of the largest seal colonies in Iceland

• Stretch your legs at Gerðuberg cliffs, an impressive wall of basalt columns

Soak in a pool in Borgarnes

• Or, walk through the Icelandic Sagas at the Settlement Center. A comprehensive audio-guide details the coming of Vikings to Iceland in the 9th century


Day 12: Departure day!

• Go to the Reykjanes lighthouse for some oceanside views

• Visit the Bridge between Continents where you can see evidence of the tectonic plates drifting apart

• Finally, transfer to the airport for departure
