Akaroa, follow in the footsteps of French colonists

Somewhere to the south of Christchurch, at the end of a quiet little road, you'll find a small town where life is good, the walks are stunning and the locals like nothing more than mulling over past times, whilst watching the sun go down over the bay...

A little history of Akaroa

Walking through Akaroa, the first thing you'll notice is the omnipresence of all things French - place and street names along with architectural styles, which seem wierd in a country so far away from France. What you may not know is that it was colonized in the 19th Century by a small community of French whalers. It didn't last long; English settlers were loathe to share the land with any outsider, least of all the French!

Despite their short-lived history, the French colonials managed to leave their mark, which is still referenced today. A service station called 'Essence' (gas in French), 'Rue Lavaud' and a plaque commemorating Michel Rocard, a former French Prime Minister who forged further links between the two countries. So if any of you miss a bit of Europe during your trip to New Zealand, then take a detour and stop at Akarao, a little far away, France from France!

French signs in Akaroa

Things to do in Akaroa.

Apart from it's francophile charm, Akaroa also has a village feel and is a great place for families traveling around New Zealand. It's a relaxing little spot and you'll be able to unwind, as well as enjoy its surrounding countryside. It's so pretty and appealing that it's almost impossible to feel stressed or hurried here. So, instead of rushing around, make the most of living the moment and let tomorrow take care of itself! Akaroa has something for everyone, full of activities for the whole family.

Kids will love going on boat trips, playing mini-golf or visiting the town's museum, housed in a mansion fit for royalty! Older visitors can tour local vineyards (wine tasting, in moderation, allowed!), hike in the hills, charter a fishing boat or go dolphin watching for the day.

A great family activity is the tour of the town, lead by a guide in full period costume, who'll tell you all about Akaroa, it's history, folklore and traditions. So whereas the town may not be THE place to visit in New Zealand, Akaroa still has a traditional charm for you to enjoy during your trip to New Zealand !
