Trakošćan is not one of the essential places to see when visiting Croatia. I simply cannot talk about Trakošćan without mentioning its castle. In fact, this is really the only interesting thing to see in the local area here in my opinion. The castle dominates the surrounding valley, which is not surprising given that it was constructed in order to keep watch over the local area.
I was not overly impressed with the Neo-Gothic style of the building, which is a bit too showy and overdone for my tastes. It seems more rococo in appearance to me, and I'm not a big fan of that style. Nevertheless, I could not help but admire the castle for the amount of effort that must have gone into making it such a majestic and stately building.
Something I was much more taken with was the walk I went on along the paths that run all round the castle. If seeing and visiting the castle itself constitutes one of the essential things to do when visiting Croatia, then the experience of walking the paths around it is another.
