Khatgal has an old port and an ambience that was a pleasure to discover in Mongolia.
I really enjoyed wandering around this atypical town. If you fancy a bite, try some smoked fish and, with a bit of luck, you'll bump into Salmon, a Korean who speaks English and loves meeting foreign visitors. He'll undoubtedly invite you, as he did me, to meet his Mongolian friends and sample some of his home brew - a blueberry wine he created and produces here.
Even though the lake is a fabulous destination in itself, you can also catch a boat from Khatgal and head south along the Egg (pronounced 'egiin gol'). As with the lake, its waters are clear and you'll pass by beautiful scenes of yaks grazing the pastures along its banks. You may even catch sight of flying ducks...
