Situated at more than 1,600m high, Khatgalis at the southern edge of Lake Khövsgöl, from where the River Egg flows. It's a favourite with Mongolian tourists, who come to cruise around the lake.

My suggestion:
Off season, it's a quiet place You'll have no problem sorting out a place to stay. If you want to go fishing, sort out equipment in advance, as it's hard to find here.
Summary:

Khatgal has an old port and an ambience that was a pleasure to discover in Mongolia.

I really enjoyed wandering around this atypical town. If you fancy a bite, try some smoked fish and, with a bit of luck, you'll bump into Salmon, a Korean who speaks English and loves meeting foreign visitors. He'll undoubtedly invite you, as he did me, to meet his Mongolian friends and sample some of his home brew - a blueberry wine he created and produces here.

Even though the lake is a fabulous destination in itself, you can also catch a boat from Khatgal and head south along the Egg (pronounced 'egiin gol'). As with the lake, its waters are clear and you'll pass by beautiful scenes of yaks grazing the pastures along its banks. You may even catch sight of flying ducks...

Summary:
By far the best tour and experience I ever had. Mongolia is like nothing I have ever experienced. Bayaraa and his wife Nyamaa plus the team made my trip unforgettable. They went above and beyond to make sure we were all happy with our trip."

Summary:
The lake water is still very clean but a rise in livestock using the area for winter pasture has led to some pollution of the shore and feeder rivers, so you are better off purifying your water. Khuvsgul is a pristine but increasingly heavily visited part of Mongolia. Please minimise your impact on this beautiful region.BL Guesthouse Very lovely place./mongoliantrips@yahoo.com tel: 976-99963994 / The owners are super nice and helpful.
