Montagne D'Ambre National Park (Madagascar)

The area covered by this group of volcanic mountains, which range from 2,800 ft to 4,850 ft in height, is a prime example of a moist evergreen forest environment.

This national park contains six crater lakes, amongst which is Lac Maudit, where a pair of Madagascan fish eagles can sometimes be found living, The eagle is the island's largest bird of prey, with a wingspan that can reach over seven feet.

Among the large trees to be found here are the ramy, which smells like turpentine and has pharmaceutical uses; the rotra, whose fruits are absolutely adored by the local lemurs; and the fig trees, which have marvelous climbing orchids on them. In fact, something for you to visit and see in the north of Madagascar is the specially created "Path of a Thousand Trees", which brings together a large number of the country's various native species in one place.

Getting back to superlatives, Amber Mountain is home to the brown mouse lemur, which at just 50 grams in weight is the world's smallest primate, and calumma crypticum, the world's smallest chameleon!
