Skaftafell is a large area to visit lying between Vik and Jokulsarlon. There has never been much built in this part of Iceland due to the lava flows and floods caused by the various volcanic eruptions here! The area has therefore remained wild and utterly beautiful. Leave your car in the car park and head off to explore Vatnajökull National Park on foot. I especially enjoyed going to see Svartifoss Waterfall and its basalt columns. Allow two to three hours to get there and back.
While at Skaftafell, I also got the opportunity go on a guided glacier tour, which was a completely unique and magical experience. The sound of the silence periodically interrupted by the noise of cracking ice and the almost supranatural colours, ranging in tone from transparent to turquoise blue, will forever be engraved in my memory.
I'm thinking of giving the climbing option a go next time. That looks like good fun too!
