During a trip to Bolivia, and while exploring Salar de Uyuni and its surroundings, we travelled through the desert and salt flat of Chiguana.
After a hard night in the Bolivian cold (and completely dressed up mind!) it was time to continue our journey in the Uyuni desert. We reached Chiguana desert fairly quickly. As we travelled along, scenery filled with cacti and llamas opened up before our eyes.
Dominated by the Ollagüe volcano, Chiguana desert is covered in ochre-coloured volcanic rocks. We stopped to get a closer look and discovered the most famous rock of them all: el Arbol de Piedra, literally "the stone tree", and you could really see the resemblance! We continued along the road and headed towards three lagoons: Laguna Cañapa, Laguna Honda and Laguna Hedionda. But the desert's star attraction is the salt flat of the same name: the Salar de Chiguana.
It's a nice adventure in the borders of Bolivia, as long as your back can cope with the bumps in the 4x4!
