Yerevan is my favourite place in Armenia. I was only planning to stay for three or four days, but ending up staying over a week. If you want to get a cultural fix, then I highly recommend you spend an evening at the Yerevan Opera. Firstly, it's a stunning place and, secondly, there are shows every evening! I saw a folk music concert and a traditional dance performance - 2hr 30min show for two people at the bargain price of £35. I came away with unforgettable memories, knowing I'd had a real taste of local culture. I think it's important to understand Armenia's history, a dark past that very much remains in people's minds today. For example, I was highly aware of Armenia's bitterness regarding the genocide carried out by Turkey. A visit to the Armenian Genocide Museum is a must.

Yereven, the capital of Armenia, is steeped in history and culture. It's a town you must visit during <a href="/armenia/">your trip to Armenia</a>.

I spent a short week in Yerevan, using it as a base to explore the centre of the country, and I have to admit that I was seduced by the town. Not necessarily because of its beauty or the richness of its historic buildings (although there are some beautiful 19th century avenues in the centre of town), but because life there is restful and lively at the same time, and you feel good there. Yerevan has lots of parks and cafe terraces where you can sit and watch the world go by. There are lots of restaurants offering local specialties, and Yerevan has a really active cultural life - theatres, galleries and concerts. Its definitely somewhere you have to go during a <a href="/armenia/">trip to the country.</a>
