Always try out your equipment several weeks before you leave on a trek, especially if it's new.

My suggestion

This stage is optional since it's a bit difficult. You can circumvent the San Antonio pass if you wish and thus not go via the Laguna. However, it's worth making the detour if you can; the view from the top is spectacular.
