Many of Canada's villages were founded by priests and bishops, in this case it was during 1863 by a priest called Brassard. Here you'll find yourself to the north of Mont-Tremblant Park, with no roads beyond the village - just forest trails and a path leading to Lake Taureau.
If you head out from the Auberge du Lac Taureau, you'll only be able to walk around part of the lake and reservoir, which are an impressive 90km2. So it's preferable to go out on a canoe, kayak or, if you want to stick to dry land, tour by snowmobile or dogsled.
The lovely thing about Saint-Michel is not only its stunning countryside but also its welcoming inhabitants. In addition to the well-known Auberge, this small town of 2,500 also has a hotel, two motels and a campsite by Lake Taureau. You can also visit the nearby Atikamek of Manawan Reserve, which is a two hour drive away. They may well greet you with surprise - it's quite a long way through the forest to get there. But it's a special moment to be had during any holiday in Canada!
The interest in Saint-Michel-des-Saints is to find yourself not far from Montreal and that it abounds in little lakes and forests... Lanaudière, the ideal region for finding a little chalet to rent if you don't have a friend who already has one, and having a traditional weekend 'friends in the woods barbecue'.
If the chalet isn't too rustic, perhaps you'll have the luck to find a spa there... a preferred spot of the male sex for an aperitif!
Amongst water sports and swimming areas for the bravest, who will no doubt end up a little devoured by the bugs, the surrounding countryside is very pleasant. Lac-Taureau National Park offers beautiful walks and Lake Kempt, not far from there, is one of the biggest in Quebec.
When winter arrives, this is a region where you can go on snowmobiles or dog sleds.
The Atikamekw village of Manawan will allow you to discover the richness of the Amerindian culture, for a little bit of a more authentic tourist experience.
