Tissa: a place to spend the night before going on safari.

My suggestion:
Go for a walk along the shores of the lake.
Summary:

When visiting Sri Lanka, it's actually possible to go on a safari at the Yala or Bundala national parks, and Tissamaharama, which lies close to both these nature reserves, is where people often choose to stay. The town is a former ancient capital, though there is little remaining from those times today, except for both the huge, white Buddhist dagoba and another built 2300 years ago.

I was impressed by the kindness of the local inhabitants, who though no doubt used to tourists, have not become indifferent and blasé towards them. After the day on safari, I then spent an enjoyable time walking along the shores of the lake. It's actually a huge artificial lake that provides water that's used to irrigate the crops during the dry season. I saw and observed numerous animals in the lush vegetation; especially egrets, which took flight as I passed by.
