During my <a href="/india/">trip to India</a>, I did go trekking in the Zanskar region because I was afraid that I was not in the best physical condition. So I chose to trek the Markha valley, from Chilling to Shang Sumdo (5 days), something which I later regretted because it was really easy for me.
The valley of Markha is quite close to Zanskar but the tourists that I came across, who had started earlier than me were unanimous: it is that the Zanskar region is the most interesting.
Unlike the Markha valley, where it is possible to sleep and eat every night at a local resident's house, it is necessary to transport food for treks around Zanskar. The agencies in Leh will generally arrange for you to leave from Lamayuru, a small village perched in the mountains. Solo, you can find a guide and a donkey there.

In Zanskar you can do the most physical treks which are also the most interesting of Ladakh.

Zanskar... People come here, they get affected by it, and they always come back! It's surely one of the most isolated areas in the whole world. For 8 months of the year, roads that lead here are closed for snow.  I loved visiting Zanskar. Its residents, mostly peasants and monks, are lovable and very welcoming. Monsoon generally falls between May and July and downfall can be extremely heavy, even it is is brief. In the jungle regions, this can lead to flash flooding and a lot of disruption and so, for this reason, travelling during monsoon season is generally to be avoided. In the South, the monsoon-like weather can return around October to soak the country for a second time but if you plan on sticking to the North of the country during this time then this shouldn’t be a problem. During high summer, temperatures can peak and become scorching, at which time it is best to be in higher altitudes where the air is cooler and the heat isn’t quite so overpowering. August and September are the best times for active families looking to head into the mountains, and this is the height of trekking season when the Himalayas are at their best.
