San Miguel de Allende
President Enrique Peña Nieto once described his country as 'a mosaic of different realities and beauties' and this could not be more true. Visiting the different states and regions of Mexico is like travelling through separate countries.

Favourites from the agency
  • The archaeological site of Uxmal is one of our favourites of the Mayan ruins. It is peaceful and not widely visited by tourists.
  • The island of Holbox is still relatively untouched by tourism and is one of the most beautiful, authentic and romantic destinations in the country.
  • Cenotes are truly unique to the Yucatán peninsular. Cenotes are natural pools of fresh and crystalline water, created by holes in the soft ground.
  • When visiting Guanajuato you don't need organised activities. You can simply wander through the maze of colourful, vibrant streets lined with stalls!

Our agency offers customers the opportunity to visit many local people in their homes or workshops to eat local food and see how the people make their trade. This gives travellers the opportunity to really experience authentic Mexico while learning about local culture and traditions. We also offer the chance for our travelers to stay in eco-friendly accommodation in some of the more off-the-beaten-track areas of the country such as the Sierra Gorda Nature Reserve and the jungles of Chiapas. Both options provide work and extra income for residents of remote areas of Mexico. See more

We enjoyed our adventurous itinerary created with our extremely helpful local agent, Harriet! Harriet's native language is English, but we understand she speaks Spanish as well. We loved swimming in many cenotes, taking a boat tour of Rio Lagartos to see wildlife, visiting the Cocoa Museum near Uxmal, taking a guided tour of Loltun Caves, riding bicycles around the ruins of Coba and climbing to the top of the main pyramid, snorkeling with sea turtles in Akumal, and floating down a lazy river in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve.
    Worst parts:
Pushy vendors in Chichen Itza,. Our driver for the week was friendly, however he did not always know where to go, and we missed one tour site because of that. The English speaking tour guides at Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and Hacienda Sotuta de Peon all had heavy accents which made it difficult for our children (ages 9 and 6) to understand. While we loved our Loltun tour guide (he was so local, he grew up playing in the grotto before it was a tourist attraction), it would have been nice to know that we would need to pay for a local guide in order to enter the grotto.
    Summary:

It was incredibly hot and humid, so the best parts of the trip were when we were in water, including four cenotes, a snorkel day where we saw sea turtles in Akumal, and floating down a lazy river in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. The adults enjoyed learning about and comparing the three Mayan ruins we visited; Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and Coba. Our favorite hotel was *** in Merida, with a lovely & comfortable room, delicious breakfast, and excellent restaurant for dinner. Our favorite local guide was Santi with *** (environmentally and socially responsible tourism company) who led us on the day trip through Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve and Muyil archaeological site.See more

I loved being able to explore the cenotes (cavernous fresh water swimming holes), Mayan archeological sites and the Rio Lagartos water reserve during the afternoon and return back to the city of Valladolid or Mérida in the evening for a tasty meal of authentic Mayan cuisine. It was a perfect mix of outdoor adventure, food and culture. We met many friendly people along the way...we made efforts to communicate as much as possible in Spanish and it completely enriched our travel experience. A truly unforgettable trip!See more

I am over the moon that you had such a great trip in Mexico. You really did visit some of the most beautiful spots in the Yucatán Peninsula - Holbox is by far one of my favorite places to visit for some relaxation! It's great that you were able to try some local food, meet some wonderful people and speak some Spanish during your travels! It was an absolute pleasure to help you plan your trip, you were both such wonderful customers. If you ever find yourselves planning a trip to Mexico again, I would love to show you more of what this beautiful country has to offer. All the best from sunny Mérida, HarrietSee more
