When I went to Palenque during my <a href="/mexico/">trip to Mexico,</a> I took advantage of the opportunity to spend an afternoon at Agua Azul. The road that takes you there runs deep through the jungle. There are large signs along the way informing visitors that this is no longer Mexico but Zapatista territory. They sometimes quickly set up roadblocks. The money collected at them is used to finance the struggle. It's not possible to negotiate.

Chiapas is definitely one of my favourite regions. It has an enormous amount of things to see and discover, whether that's in terms of architecture, culture, or, of course, the countryside and natural environment. Central and Southern Mexico get a rainy season during high summer but Northern Mexico very rarely sees any showers.
