Best places to visit in Namibia

Inhabited by bushmen, a people used to the extreme aridity, a country of oryx (antelopes) and kokerbooms (desert trees), Namibia, with its terrain and the sun's intensity, is known for its grandiose desert-like scenery and almost martian atmosphere... But what are the must-sees during a trip to Namibia?

Its capital, Windhoek, is a pleasant city, where it's worth making the most of the attractions and resting well before heading out into the arid, endlessly stretching bush. 

Descending to the South, the main attraction is the Namib Desert and its Dune 45, from the top of which you'll have an incredible view of the sunrise. Further to the South, at the South African border, the Fish River Canyon sinks into the depths of the ocre ground, resulting in magnificent, towering rocky gorges.

Climbing up towards the North again, visitors will discover Etosha National Park. There, you'll see the famous oryx, the antelope which forms the country's symbol, but also any number of lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, leopards, cheetahs and more. It's a rich range of wildlife, all of whom gather together around the water holes in dry season.

At the Angolan border, and quite difficult to access, live the renowned Himbas, an impressive tribe who coat their skin and hair with a red clay. The Caprivi strip, linking the country to the Victoria falls, is an extraordinarily green and fertile piece of land which forms a migration corridor for elephants and which is partially submerged each rainy season.

Lastly, the Kalahari Desert, which separates Namibia from Botswana and South Africa, is one of the vastest and wildest on the planet. It's here that the Bushmen live, a tribe menaced by drought and the exploitation of the region for mining, made famous by the film The Gods Have Fallen on their Heads (1980).

Ojtiwarongo, a farming town in the north of Namibia , is located between Windhoek and Etosha National Park . This town is home to Namibia's only crocodile farm. 
The National Park is a must-see destination during a trip to Namibia if you want to see big animals. Etosha is a beautiful reserve which can be discovered independently or with guides. On the agenda: lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, elephants, gazelles...
Damaraland is a vast region of North West Namibia, which comprises several exceptional sites such as Brandberg, Twyfelfontein, Vingerclip or again Spitzkoppe.
Namibia's capital is the point of entry and exit and also a nice city to visit with nevertheless a higher rate of delinquency and crime than in the rest of the country, so you do need to be on your guard. 
Twyfelfontein is a very lovely site, not to be missed during a trip to Namibia , that has superb rock etchings dating back 2000 to 2500 years, that you can discover in the course of a lovely walk.
The second city of the country is much more pleasant than the capital, Windhoek. Its location by the sea gives it a more care-free and relaxed atmosphere. For me, it’s the most beautiful city in the country. 
A trip to Namibia will have you crossing several deserts, Namib Desert, Kalahari Desert and many desert sites that bear no name. They all have their specificities and their landscapes are all different.
Like Halali, Namutoni is the other camping site inside Etosha National Park, located in an ancient German fort.
Surely the best of the three camps in Etosha National Park, Okaukuejo is located at the west entrance to the park.
Located about nineteen miles from Swakopmund, Walvis Bay is a pleasant town, facing the sea, from where there are daily excursions to discover the coast and the local fauna. 
Sossusvlei just like Deid Vlei is inside Namib-Naukluft National Park. This is where you find the famous orange sand dunes, the most well-known Namibian landscape and a must.
Okahandja is a city which leads to Etosha National Park, practical for a stop on the way there.
Ghaub is a location with a farm which is still in use and which has enormous caves, allegedly the third biggest caves in the country.  
Not far from Sossusvlei lie the canyon and dried up river of Sesriem, it is possible to go on a lovely hike in the heart of the canyon whose ochre colours change with the orange of the sand dunes situated not far away from there.
Omaruru is a charming little town which can serve as a stopover in the region of Erongo or on the road to Damaraland during your stay in Namibia.
Undoubtedly one of the most iconic landscapes in Namibia, this petrified valley in the heart of the red desert is beautiful. It's a great experience. 
A desert massif which houses beautiful rock paintings and which provides some lovely strolls on the highest peak in the country, the Königstein.
A region which is hard to get to, close to the border with Botswana, whose main centre is the town of Tsumkwe.
In the far north of Namibia, next to Angola, Kaokoland is one of the most remote and inaccessible areas of the country, truly off the beaten track.
Palmwag is the "pearl" of the northwestern region of Damaraland , located on the edge of the Skeleton Coast National Park. Palmwag is a place where the Uniab River flows and where several animals live, including the desert elephants.
