Tequisquiapan is the perfect place to get away from the noise of large cities. In the centre of Mexico, you will find sources of warm water, wine cellars, farms producing cheese and a dynamic historic centre.
My suggestion:
Allow 2/3 days to visit this region, starting with the city of San Juan del Rio, then Tequisquiapan and finally la Peña de Bernal.
Summary:
Tequisquiapan is worth the detour for its relaxing, family atmosphere. In the city centre, you will find a bustling market offering interesting blends of fruit juices only available here, and you can eat fresh, local produce. Next to the market, there is the Rulfo bookshop with books in English and French.
As in all the provincial cities in Mexico, Sunday is a family day where all the locals go out for a walk along the lake and you will discover an authentic atmosphere because the tourists who go there are mainly Mexican.
Personally, what I like in Tequisquiapan is that it felt like time had stopped and the town hadn't really changed in construction since 1939. In addition, 25km away you will find la Peña de Bernal, 340 metre long monolith (the third largest monolith in the world) and 10 millions years old, and classified as one of Unesco's World Heritage sites, a stroll is really worth it. The village sharing the same name is also charming itself.
Visiting Tequisquiapan gives you the opportunity to take a journey in time during your trip to Mexico.
