Once covered by immense forests, the Tampoketsa plateaus are typical of the landscapes of present-day Madagascar. The vast hills have been gradually cleared to permit agriculture and especially livestock, leaving only a few remnants of forests isolated in the hollows between the hills where there are a few streams. Like true oases, these nooks of greenery have survived thanks to their craggy locations which form natural barriers against fire. The Tampoketsa plateaus promise great walking in an environment shaped by the hand of man and the action of time, which together have formed a remarkable and surprising panorama.
