Mahajanga is an important city of the north-west of Madagascar. Located at the mouth of the Betsiboka River on the Mozambique Channel, the city has approximately 200,000 inhabitants and is the capital of the region that bears the same name.
My suggestion:
Every year, the month of July is the time for the Fanompoa Be, the bath of royal relics of the Sakalava people, which opens a week of festivities.
Summary:
Once an important maritime settlement, the city is reputed to have been founded by Arab sailors around the fifteenth century, before becoming the capital of a Sakalava kingdom.
Today, Mahajanga is populated by many ethnic groups from the whole island, as well as Indian and European migrants. The town possesses beautiful architecture which reflects its history: ancient mosques, Indian-style buildings and also buildings from the colonial era, such as the covered market. So architecture lovers will take advantage of their trip to Madagascar to discover it!
The city's seafront is particularly pleasant and the beaches are more and more beautiful as one moves away from the centre. In the evening, enjoy zebu kebabs while watching the sunset on the Mozambique Channel - the atmosphere is guaranteed!
