- Encounters with locals
- Off the beaten track
I spent a magical day on Bilu Kyun island. We set off to explore the island's surroundings by bicycle without a map. We encountered nothing but smiling faces. Children gave us tours of their villages, offered us water and were happy to let us take photos with them.
Bilu Kyun island is the kind of traditionally authentic place you can discover by getting away from the beaten path when travelling in Burma. You encounter very few Westerners on the island, and tourists are not permitted to sleep over there. Nobody (or almost nobody) speaks English and you have to gesture to make yourself understood. This makes visiting the island an even more unusual experience. As you've no doubt realised, Bilu Kyun island is a real favorite of mine, and the visit there led me to fall for the charm of the Burmese people.
Climb onto your bicycle and wander off to explore this little island's few roads.
