Much sought-after by holidaying Venezualans, Merida is known for its cable car (the highest in the world) and offers family activities and sporting circuits.

My suggestion:
Respect the security measures to adopt in Venezuela and don't let your attention wander because the city seems more relaxed than elsewhere.
Summary:

Mount Bolivar's highest point is at 5,007 m, overlooking Merida. The longest cable car in the world ascends nearby, at Mount Espejo (4,765 m). Unfortunately, I couldn't go there as it was being repaired and the latest news is that it's still being repaired. In all, 4 years of reparations, but you never know.

For hiking lovers, Sierra Nevada National Park offers beautiful hiking possibilities, with or without a guide. The mountains around Merida are suitable for other activities, such as paragliding, rafting, canyoning and mountain biking, but they're not cheap.

Merida is welcoming and lively. This is partly due to the student population. But safety is no more assured than in other parts of the country. At the entrance to my hotel, you had to pass your ID piece through a small window before the door opened.
