Karatu is a village situated between the national parks of Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater , in the northern part of Tanzania, near Arusha .

My suggestion:
Sleep over at Karatu to visit both these sights, as the village is ideally positioned. Leave very early in the morning for Ngorongoro Crater if you want to carry on with a visit to Serengeti National Park.
Summary:

I quite liked Karatu village, for it is ideally located near Ngorongoro Crater and you find all manner of accommodation here. I went on a tour organised in the region, we slept in a camp open to the general public, comprised of traditional huts made up for two people, it was really nice. We could enjoy the view on Lake Eyasi down below in the morning, just when the baboons came out to play, it was terrific.

In the evening, I went out with friends to one of the local village bars. Excellent welcome, good atmosphere, the people from round here get around by motorcycle and come and grill their meat in front of the bar that has a small dance floor. The village itself is very nice, with lots of small African-style roadside stalls.
