Halfway between Windhoek and Keetmanshoop, Mariental is in the heart of the orange dunes of the Kalahari Desert.

My suggestion:
Choose accommodation in the lodges or the farms in the area.
Summary:

During my trip to Namibia, my last weekend should have been spent at Windhoek, but my Namibian friends decided otherwise and we set off for the area surrounding Mariental for my last hours in this fabulous country, Namibia.

Mariental is a small city without interest, apart from its petrol station. I passed through there during my drop down to the south and I returned 50 km from there, during the last 48 hours of the trip, to the Bagatelle Kalahari Ranch. The first thing to hit me was the colour of the ground: a bright orange, verging on red. At sunset, it's even more visible and the sundowners were a really lovely moment.

I was able to see numerous gazelles in complete, or semi-freedom on the ranch and in the surrounding areas. Apparently, there are leopards too, but on that occasion there was no sign of their presence. Too bad, but the rest mostly made up for it!
