If you like picture-perfect scenery the road from Ourika to Oukaïmeden is well worth a visit. At first the landscape is green with olive trees and evergreen oaks but as you go up it becomes more stark. You will have magnificent views of the High Atlas foothills and see rock carvings. At the top of Jebel Oukaïmeden, you can admire the splendid view over the Toubkal mountains and the Haouz plain. In summer the resort is a cool haven with its vast high-altitude pastures I loved the local tajines: special dishes simmered in the ground! Authentic family cooking, simply yet delicious.

Oukaimden is best visited when the weather is good. The road takes you there in an hour and a half from Marrakech and is a fine introduction to the Ourika valley. You leave the bottom of the valley to go thirty kilometres up the hillside where cultivated terraces lead to vast pastures around which the resort is built.
Stalls, street traders and ski instructors await the tourists who go by donkey to reach the only chairlift to find snow. During the holidays I see coach-loads of Moroccan tourists and school groups and the road is often blocked when it is time to head back. I avoid the stalls and restaurants offering poor value for money. Using snowshoes or on foot in the summer, I especially love walking on the slopes leading to the villages of Tacheddirt with Agadir way below. The climb can also be done on the marked out rocks or on the nearby sandstone boulders.
