Dakhla, an unmissable spot for kite surfing

To discover Dakhla is to discover its huge beaches, its nearby desert and sporty culture but also to depart on the trail to discovering a particularly wild region of Morocco.

Kite surfing

The majority of travellers who go to Dakhla these days, come for its reputation of being an excellent place for kite surfing. As a result of its geographical location, the quality of its creeks, its strong winds which are almost always in the right direction, sailors from around the world come to practise at this place rendered mythical.

Duringa trip to Morocco, if you want to discover a particularly special area of Morocco, whilst trying a high thrill sport which will not leave you unmoved, you are in the right place!

More and more locals have tried a hand at this sport and some of them have become very good. They therefore teach kite surfing at ridiculously low prices, providing an opportunity to do a beginner's course or to reach expert level there. They can always provide the necessary material for sailing at your level if you do not have your own.

A family village

The family in Morocco

With this very specific type of tourism and the closeness of the mythical traveller's route which goes down to Western Africa by foot, Dakhla has a unique atmosphere. You are truly far from the package tourism of Agadir or Marrakech. To get to Dakhla, you must really have wanted it.

Even if today an air service links this small town of the Great South with the north of the country, the majority of travellers go to Dakhla by road. So, they can be seen arriving from afar, often in outfitted trucks, caravans or campervans, with kite surfing or surfing equipment on the back, and smiles stretching to their ears.

Many places have been created to welcome these nomadic travellers on the spot, at the beach or some even further inland. Therefore the atmosphere is very familial and convivial, a lot of young parents with children, or retired people on the road to Africa.

Between the desert and the Ocean

Dakhla's location is unique and unforgettable duringa trip to Morocco. Located in the heart of the contentious and controversial Western Sahara, it's a village which is separated and very different from the rest of the country.

Between desert and ocean, swept by strong Atlantic winds or by the burning and stinging Harmattan wind from the sand dunes, the town sometimes seems to not belong here, it seems to be an oasis or even a desert mirage.

However, it has a crazy charm for those who are willing to go off the beaten track and away from the tourist areas to discover it. If you want to distance yourself from the group of sporty people, or simply discover the town, don't hesitate to lose yourself wandering its alleyways looking for the different ethnicities which inhabit its houses.
