The medium altitude, primary moist forest of Vohimanana is threatened. In fact, the Betsimisaraka people's increase in practicing slash-and-burn agriculture has caused ecological disturbance. Vohimanana has thus become a priority site of forest regeneration. For around twenty years, the NGO "L’homme et l’environnement " has been established in the region to promote eco-tourism there. They've been able to reforest more than 326 hectares of forest at their intervention sites. The NGO has established many positive initiatives that the locals actively work for: setting up stills for essential oil production, botanical conservatories, an orchidarium, and health and education programs... They are trying to promote culture and the locals' expertise. Tours allow people to participate in this desire to preserve the environment: collecting medicinal leaves for essential oils, discovering and learning basket-making with the Betsimisaraka women, discovering the primary forest that is full of lemurs, amphibians, orchids, rivers, waterfalls and natural pools...
