A small town of around 5,000 people located about ten kilometres from the coast in the northern region of Istria, Buje boasts a beautiful, old, historic centre which, despite its relative size, reveals its rich Venetian past. This influence is still being felt today as almost half of Buje's (or Buie's) residents are Italian-speaking. You'll notice Italy's continuing influence in the northwest of the country, particularly in the region of Istria.
I strongly advise you to travel through Buje and stop off there if you have time. The city is pleasant, and you feel perfectly at home in the shadow of its XVI century baroque church and in its small cobbled square with its many terraces. Treat yourself to delicious Mediterranean cooking and local wines. A beautiful surprise off the beaten track.
