Standing on a kind of peninsula extending out into the sea, the town of Cavtat is one of the most famous on the Croatian coast, both for its exceptional location by the side of some exceptionally beautiful beaches and for the rich sense of history that emanates from its little medieval streets. Despite the heavy tourism the town's obvious charms attract, I found that Cavtat has actually managed to retain all the wonderful characteristics of a quiet, peaceful little town by the sea.
When I was visiting Croatia and staying in Cavtat, I went up into the mountains that extend along the coast, marking the border with Bosnia, for the chance to enjoy some wonderful hikes amongst the natural, unspoiled scenery there. This is a nice way to explore the region and offers an alternative to the usual attractions, namely the beaches and the sea.
