An archipelago facing Dubrovnik, the Elaphite Islands are great for daytime excursions leaving from Croatia's principle tourist town.

My suggestion:
Make sure you pick up a pair of sandals before heading to the islands, as the beaches are littered with sea urchins.
Summary:

The Elaphites is an archipelago comprising of, amongst others, Sipan (the largest island), Lopud with its white, sandy beaches, Kolocep and Lokrum. Each island has its own characteristics, although most are either uninhabited or home to tourist resorts. As with most Croatian island, the scenery is mind-blowing, with lush coastlines bordering turquoise seas.

I managed to see Sipan and Lokrum when visitng the Elaphites. Home to around 500 people and slightly further away from Dubrovnik, Sipan has a lovely quiet, rural feel, even though tourist activities are somewhat limited. Lokrum, on the other hand, is half an hour away from Durbrovnik and is a popular tourist trap for people visiting Croatia.
