Whether you are looking for a romantic destination or a place to stay with children, this is it. Whilst this tranquil spot is not the best kept secret and many travellers have fallen in love with it and moved there, it is still very welcoming, peaceful and authentic. Some of the expats have become friendly restaurant or youth hostel owners, or talented craftsmen, and will be pleased to chat with you and show you some local gems. Take a stroll down the little streets of this small town, take the time to get to know the inhabitants, explore the markets and eat local food, especially the freshly caught fish that is so incredible here. Samara is an unmissable gem and a must see for your Costa Rican itinerary.

Once you've relaxed on the fantastic beach there are lots of other activities in the town. If you love snorkelling and the idea of exploring an underwater world, then you’ll be overjoyed to discover the local coral reef and its abundant and impressive sea life. For easy, hassle- free exploration simply grab a snorkel and head out. If you want something more challenging then there is also a scuba diving club who will show you the ropes and provide equipment. If you want to recharge your batteries in ideal surroundings then you can practice yoga or relax in a spa. There are also plenty of activities, such as walking or riding and several treks that will let you explore the sumptuous surrounding countryside and heavenly beaches. Thrill-seekers won’t be left wanting either, with mountain biking, zip lining and guided fishing trips available. There are even educational options, such as signing up to learn Spanish in one of the local institutes. Samara may be a small town, but you won't get bored here.

Samara Beach

The white sand edged with coconut palms, clear blue water, a coral reef and pretty creeks carved into the land make Samara’s beach one of a kind. But be careful, the sun can be surprisingly strong, and it's better to go there early in the morning or at the end of the afternoon, so you don't risk sunburn or having to spend the rest of your trip as a lobster-human hybrid. What’s more, visiting the beach at these times means that you'll be better able to appreciate its tranquility, since the beach is less likely to be busy. The coral reef acts as a barrier, meaning that you can swim peacefully or even take your first steps in learning to surf without worrying about enormous waves.

Why not stay in Samara for several days during your trip to Costa Rica? Make the most of its calm, welcoming and gentle way of life - the Costa Rican "Pura Vida".
