A popular place with Santarem residents, Alter do Chão is famous for its "Lagoa verde" (green lagoon), which, from June to December, when the river is at its lowest, takes on a turquoise color, with the low water exposing gorgeous white sandy beaches.
I went there after spending time at the heart of the Amazon rainforest, which made my visit to Alter do Chão all the more relaxing and refreshing. What a joy it is to bask on the beaches along the river. I recommend sitting at one of the numerous tables set out on the bank to enjoy some of the local dishes.
I took a short boat trip across the lagoon to reach the island of Ilha do Amor. After a quick spot of bathing in the river, I watched the sunset reflecting of its surface, revealing astonishing colors.
Surrounded by Amazonian rainforest as it is, Alter do Chão is also the ideal place for day excursions exploring the Brazilian jungle. Don't be afraid to call on the services of a local guide, who will be able to reveal all the mysteries of the jungle to you.
