On arriving from Cambodia during my world tour, Chau Doc was the first town I visited during my trip to Vietnam. It was a complete eye-opener. It was a great introduction as it's an amazing town.
As soon as I arrived, I hopped on a boat and immediately immersed myself in life on the Mékong. Some of the boats are floating shops! I came across fruit, vegetable and clothes sellers...I saw entire floating villages that live off fish farming. Once back on solid ground, I suggest you discover the town by exploring its market. There were fruit and vegetable stalls, next to dry fish, prawns and hung meats. 30 minutes away by bus, you'll find Mount Sam, a popular Vietnamese pilgrimage site. The ascent is steep but the view from top overlooks stunning scenery and paddy fields.
Chau Doc, the first town I saw, made me fall in love with Vietnam.
