I loved Thonga Beach, firstly because to spend time there you have to stay in the only luxury lodge which gives access to it, so it is quite exclusive. The area is beautiful, has a wild beach, and is famous for its population of over 500 birds that will delight "twitchers" and casual birdwatchers alike. In the warm waters of the Indian Ocean dolphins, manta rays, giant turtles and whale sharks can be found close to the beach. The bay is home to nearly 1,250 species of marine animals, almost as much as the Great Barrier Reef which accounts for 1,500! Consequently, the main activity here is diving and snorkelling in order to observe all these underwater species.
For my part, I went snorkeling because I do not know how to dive. I loved the little boat trip I took in search of dolphins. I managed to swim closely with them and also go within some seven metres of a totally harmless whale shark. Finally, although I was not there at the right season, which runs from October to March, I should mention that turtles come to lay eggs on the beach at night in their hundreds. Guides are there to accompany tourists who want to witness this amazing natural wonder. A superb and easily recommendable place.
