How to get there
An hour's boat ride from Puerto Maldonado
When to go
Between March and June
Minimum stay
1 to 2 days
We discovered Lake Sandoval during our trek in the edge of the Amazon rainforest in the Puerto Maldonado region. From our Eco-lodge, on the banks of the Madro de Dios - the river that runs through Peru, Bolivia and Brazil - we reached this very pretty stretch of water by boat, going via narrow jungle passages and marshes.
To the distant chatter of parrots and the sometimes surprising shouts of orang-utans we slowly approached this wonderful lake, tucked away in the middle of a green paradise.
We only dipped our feet in, since we're not the only creatures to appreciate this pretty lake: in this area, piranhas are legion! Some things are best experienced only with the eyes, and that's no bad thing.
