It's at Mahuayani that the Ausangate trek starts

My suggestion:
Make sure you bring thermal underwear so that you don't get cold at night in your tent. Temperatures often drop to below 0°C.

A trip to Peru will definitely appeal to lovers of trekking. The most famous is the Inca Trail Trek, in the Cusco region, but I would also recommend the Ausangate trek. It's in the Cordillera Vilcanota, around a hundred kilometres from Cusco, where you'll find this mountain that's 6,300m of altitude.

This trek of 3 or 5 days depending on the paths taken, is known for its spectacular scenery between remote villages, terraced crops, Inca ruins and misty forests. The start is at Mahuayani, 100km from Cusco. Renowned as being quite challenging, due to its high summits, the Ausangate trek requires good resistance to altitude and good health. To fight against altitude sickness, do as the locals do (an us!): drink infusions of coca leaves.

Be aware, if you're travelling across the whole of South America, make sure you know that coca leaves are only authorised in Bolivia and Peru. Useless if you want to bring it back as a souvenir, you will run the risk of having some problems at customs...
