The Vesterålen islands are a destination where all types of outdoor activities are possible: day hikes, bike rides, sea kayaking, boat rides, whale watching, etc.
Take advantage of its location in the far western part of the archipelago to visit some of the island's lighthouses. Some are even used as lodging for long-term travellers, accommodating them in exchange for their services. I can still remember walking on a white sand beach, alone, at the foot of some impressive mountains. And the charming and isolated hamlet of Andenes will send shivers up your spine in the thick fog!
If civilisation appeals to you, be sure to take a trip to Sortland, the archipelago's main town. Though they are relatively unknown, the Vesterålen islands are essential in my opinion for any trip to Norway.
