Sesfontein is the gateway to Kaokoland and the Himba peoples, a famous nomadic people of Namibia, alas the exhibition that the Himbas make of themselves in town is not what you find at some distance in the countryside.

I did not like Sesfontein much , as always in Namibia, the town has no charm and its dusty streets are quite dreary. Some Himbas go begging in exchange for a photo, one of the negative aspects of tourism in the region. It is very difficult to access the rest of Kaokoland, so many tourists stop here which encourages the locals to stay in town rather than in their villages.  As for me, I do not linger in Sesfontein , in fact I have planned a guided visit to a traditional Himba dwelling to try to learn more about this nomadic people. I get back in the car, only taking the time to pass in front of the fort that was built during the colonial era before continuing on my way, <a href="/namibia/"> still farther up North in Namibia. </a>
