Celebrities and well-known people in Morocco

You will definitely be surprised to find out the many celebrities in France have Moroccan origins!

The Kings of Morocco

The biggest celebrity in Morocco has remained King Mohamed VI since 1999. An untouchable star, commander of believers and head of state, son of Hassan II, he has controlled the country with an iron fist for the last 15 years.

His father Hassan II and his grandfather Mohamed V are even more present in the spirits of the Moroccan people, and you will often hear them being talked about during your trip to Morocco.

The comedians and actors

Morocco is the country of origin of two of the most famous comedians in France at the moment:

The famous humorist and now cult figure, Gad Elmaleh, is Moroccan from Casablanca and has based his first shows and sketches on his Moroccan origins. He now has sold-out performances in all entertainment venues in France

Jamel Debbouze is himself native of the town of Taza, he was declared the highest paid start in French cinema in 2004 with a million euros per film and is now well known throughout France for his hilarious role in Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra.

And then there's the Moroccan actor, Saïd Taghmaoui, who broke through with his mythical role of Saïd in the film "La Haine" [Hate] by Matthieu Kassovitz and is now internationally known in Europe, as well as the Unites States.

The sports stars

Many Moroccan sportsmen and women (tennis players, runners, footballers etc.) have become very well known and have won gold medals and historic sporting and competition victories in Morocco.

One of the most recent is Marouane Chamakh, the famous Ligue 1 and Premier League footballer, awarded the best Moroccan footballer abroad and the best player in the Trophée des Champions [Champions Trophy] in 2008.

Let's not forget another sports figure, who has always claimed to be Moroccan at heart, as, although he was born in Algeria, he grew up in Morocco for 20 years: the famous boxer Marcel Cerdan, the lover of French national icon Édith Piaf.

Moroccan artists and authors

During your trip to Morocco, don't miss the chance to discover the novels of the famous writers Mohamed Choukri and Tahar Ben Jelloun, who are a real delight of literature.
