The area where Bel Ombre is located is a veritable little piece of heaven on earth, and though lying away from the main road routes across the island, it is nevertheless accessible. There is no bus service to the village, so it's better to have the use of a vehicle or opt to travel here by taxi. What I liked about Bel Ombre when I visited during my trip to Mauritius were its beach, its picture-postcard quality and the way its turquoise sea combines harmoniously with the white sand. It is these features that have led to a cluster of holiday resorts popping up close to the beach and the fact there are hotels here taller than the palm trees themselves. The area has also become a favourite spot with golfers. Dating from the last century, and with elegant gardens dotted with benches so you can sit and enjoy the peacefulness and carefully maintained greenery, I was very impressed by the layout and architecture of the Château de Bel Ombre, which stands close to the golf course. Today it is also the site of a high-class restaurant, which is no doubt the best in the area. And finally, looking out towards the southwest as it does, the beach at Bel Ombre is the ideal place from which to watch and admire the setting sun.
