With Île aux Cerfs and the other sites on the western side of the island today straining under the weight of mass tourism, the little islets and islands on the east side of Mauritius offer a quieter, more peaceful option and a chance to get away from the crowds. This is the case with ’île d’Ambre, a large and almost wild and untouched island on which I got to enjoy and admire empty, deserted beaches and bathe in crystal clear waves without the need to be careful not to collide with other holidaymakers. With its dense vegetation cover, ’île d’Ambre is one of the most adventurous destinations you can choose to visit and explore when visiting Mauritius. It's actually possible to paddle through its labyrinth of mangroves in a sea canoe, with some of the passages through them so narrow that the branches and leaves practically close in around you. Nature lovers will enjoy the bird colonies here, with the birds free to happily frolic at their leisure on this virtually deserted island.
