The elephant sanctuary is an elephant orphanage in Kuala Gandah 2 hours away up north from Kuala Lumpur by car.

My suggestion:
Personally, I hired a car in Kuala Lumpur for a day trip to the sanctuary and so was able to stop at other places on the way back.
Summary:

I spent the day at the elephant sanctuary; I had a few preconceptions on the running of the centre and the animals' welfare. At the entrance to the place, there is an explanatory film on the elephants' living conditions and the sanctuary's venture to restore these last to their natural environment. Most of the elephants were rescued from ill-treatment.

The elephants seemed to me to be in good health and well cared for, I spent the afternoon feeding them on sugar cane, then I even had a chance to bathe with them in order to wash them.

I highly recommend this family outing , the children are allowed to stroke the elephants, ride on their back (in a natural setting) and my favourite moment remains bathing with them.
