Departure or arrival of the great Landmmanalaugar hike - Thorsmork, which is only accessible by four-wheel drive, is a must see of the inland.

My suggestion:
Go there to hike in summer and for the rest of the year plan a four-wheel drive excursion if you have the means.
Summary:

Thorsmork is slightly different from the rest of Iceland in that it is one of the rare places where vegetation is to be found. This last is composed mostly of small, dry and twisted silver birch, moss and ferns. In fact, its name means "Thor's forest".

I went to Thorsmork twice, once as the last stop of the famous hike and another time, just for the day.

Indeed, it is possible to hike in the surroundings and in particular up to the top of a hill, to have a wonderful view on the inland mountains.

A good reason for going to Thorsmork is also to see the narrow gorge of Stakkoltsgjáqui which shelters a beautiful waterfall and to pass in front of the Eyjafjallajökull glacier.

There are lots of rivers cutting across the valley and it can be difficult to go across them in a four-wheel drive without prior experience, so do favour the bus which plys this route everyday from Reykjavik or take a local guide!
