A pleasant village and only hamlet of this size in the southeast of the island.

My suggestion:
A recommended stopover after visiting Jokulsarlon, where you can sit down to a serving of crayfish, the local speciality.
Summary:

Hofn is a charming, little port that I visited during my first stay on the island. It's situated on a peninsula and is surrounded by the sea.

It's not far from Jokulsarlon, which makes it a great base for touring this part of Iceland.

Hofn's centre is small, but it has two fabulous restaurants known for their crayfish dishes - a must for the foodies amongst you! Humarhofnin and Pakkhus have excellent menus that are implanted in my mind; what's more it was a fine day when I was there, so I was able to settle down to eat on a terrace. A real luxury in Iceland...

Leaving from Hofn, there's a superb walk to Hvalnes that crosses some stunning countryside.
