Kirkjubaejarklaustur has a virtually unpronounceable name, but is known for a 12th Century Benedictine convent that's steeped in history.
I hadn't as yet been on a hike in the area and I was happy to settle down for a break at the rather imposing service station. I did, however, make it to the waterfall that runs down the side of a hill on the outskirts of the village. Indeed, apart from local hikes, the village doesn't have much on offer, other than being a convenient overnight stop.
Kirkjubaejarklausturest is great base if you want to visit the Laki or Eldgjá (Fire Gorge) craters. You'll need to take road no. F208, which crosses the craters and leads to the site of Landmannalaugar.
This area's perfect for hikers who want to get off the beaten track.
