Tear yourself away from the waterfall and visit the excellent Folk Museum where you'll discover a lot about the country's history and past.

My suggestion:
Open all year round, the Folk Museum is one of the finest museums in the country. You should spend at least an hour there, if not more.
Summary:

Skogar is a small village of 25 souls yet it's an essential stop in Iceland for all those who come to admire the stunning waterfall of Skogafoss. But it would be a shame to leave without having spent a bit of time in the Folk Museum.

I particularly enjoyed the traditional objects, displayed according to types of trade: fishing, farming, and lots of daily objects which have weathered over the years. Aside from the museum, I was highly impressed by the beauty of the old peat houses. In a nutshell, it's a great place to visit on rainy days, but also whenever.

Finally, Skogar has some quality accommodation which could be an excuse to linger a little longer in the area, if you so wish.
