Thingvellir (Iceland)

Thingvellir Natural Park makes up one of the three sites of Iceland’s Golden Circle, and boasts a rich historical past as the birthplace of the nation. It is there that the Icelanders established the oldest parliament in the world in 930 AD, and where they voted their independence in 1944.

Thanks to its position atop a continental rift valley, Thingvellir is marked out by several rifts in its diverse landscapes. You’ll find a lake, a river, masses of volcanic rock, and the beautiful Öxaràrfoss Waterfall, which I thoroughly recommend visiting. Last but by no means least: the white and green church, which is found right at the heart of this breath-taking natural chaos.    

Finally, for the amateur sports enthusiasts among you, one unmissable site is the Silfra Fissure, where you can sign up to go scuba diving or snorkelling through some of the most transparent waters on the planet: it’s at the top of my list of priorities for my next trip to Iceland!
