Public transport in Costa Rica

Even though the country isn't that big, the transport you choose during your trip to Costa Rica will probably depend on how much time you have.

In town

Apart from the capital of San José, which is quite spread out, during your trip to Costa Rica most of the other towns can be visited on foot. Having said that, you can also visit San José on foot if you are a good walker, if you take your time or if you stay in the historic centre. In any case, avoid walking around at night and always check the safety of the areas you want to walk through.

It's much quicker and safer to use a taxi. Only use official ones, it's safer. They usually have a meter but if they don't then negotiate the price and make sure you have an agreement with the driver before you get in.

A cheaper alternative is a shared taxi, often a minibus, which follows fixed routes. It's important to state your destination clearly so you can be sure you are getting into the right taxi.

In Costa Rica

Between two towns

The cheapest and most popular way of getting round Costa Rica is the bus. They're not always very comfortable but there are lots of different types offered by the numerous local companies.

If you want to explore the country at your own pace, in your own way, then you need a car. Be very careful to respect the highway code as the fines are very high.

If you want to try Costa Rican trains, they are very cheap. They leave from the capital San José but don't go much further than its outskirts.

To go along the coast or into the jungle to visit remote villages you will almost certainly have to take a lancha (a boat).

If you don't have a lot of time, or you want more time for visits, or a bit more comfort, then there is the plane. Depending on the distance, airline and destination, an interior flight costs around $100 (£66).
