Costa Rica

Costa Rica, highly developed sustainable development

Costa Rica's alternative approach to tourism can hep you explore a country where biodiversity has its rightful place.

Costa Rica a country ahead of the rest

In 1948 Costa Rica was the first country in the world to disband its army and concentrate instead on the country's health and education. In regard to the environment, it is one of the world's leaders in the use of renewable energy (solar, water powered, air powered...) At the beginning of 2015 it managed to produce 100% of its electricity needs from renewable energy sources for 75 days. In 2009 its president, Oscar Arias, announced to Congress that he was "opposed to petroleum exploration" in the country. With regard to biodiversity, Costa Rica has increased its forested surface by more than 30% in 20 years.

Eco-tourism at the forefront

When you talk about Costa Rica you often think of eco-tourism, that is, tourism that respects the environment and local populations, such as agrotourism, staying with locals or in local communities... And it's true that there are lots of initiatives, even though they are not helped by mass tourism. President Oscar Arias is in a large part responsible for the country's emphasis on alternative tourism. He declared "peace on nature" and said the country would be carbon neutral by 2021. There are other government controlled initiatives such as "Bandera Azul Ecológica" (the Blue Flag Ecological Programme) or Certification for Sustainable Tourism "CST" which is awarded to hotels complying with a difficult list of specifications. In concrete terms this means the country can develop clean beaches, fight against deforestation and efficiently conserve its biodiversity. Which are all assets that you'll enjoy during your trip to Costa Rica.

Eco-tourist farms in the centre of the country

Hydroponic culture in an ecological farm in Mastalal

Mastatal, not far from Puriscal, is home to several ecological farms which welcome the public. These farms are consciously working on the principle of "permaculture", and are very respectful of the environment. Composting, recycling and prevention are meticulously used. Visitors are encouraged to help out, as much to ensure the farm works well, as to make them aware of the need to protect the environment and understand the different faces of sustainable development. Visitors are in a natural setting, right by La Cangreja National Park, experiencing the locals' traditions. This type of tourism allows you to make friendly contact with the local people. This type of stay could be a great part of your trip to Costa Rica.
