In the northern part of Yunnan Province, perched in the mountains of the Tibetan region of Kham, hides an astonishing village inhabited by Tibetan Catholics : Cizhong.

Summary:

It's famous for having the largest Catholic church in Yunnan, which was founded in 1867 by French missionaries from the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris. Architecturally, the building presents a harmonious blend of Chinese and Western styles.

The village of Cizhong becomes a particularly lively place during the Christmas period. Many festivities take place at this time of year and the village receives large numbers of visitors and pilgrims. Cizhong also still retains vineyards originally established by the French missionaries and from which the villagers produce, amongst other things, wine for the Holy Communion. There are several routes you can take from the village to go on beautiful excursions or day hikes into the surrounding mountains.
