The small town of Gyantse, 260 km southwest of Lhasa and 90 km southeast of Shigatse, is without question a beautiful place to go and visit when touring Tibet.

Summary:

Though it has lost the influence and commercial importance it had in former times, it has retained both its typically Tibetan character and several remarkable remnants of its past.

if you were to only visit one site in Gyantse, it would without doubt have to be the Palcho Monastery (Pelkor Chode) and its Kumbum, which is the largest chorten (the Tibetan version of the stupa) in Tibet. This spectacular, multi-storied building contains more than 70 chapels and 10,000 mural paintings. However, it would be a shame to deny yourself the chance to experience the climb up to the citadel, or "Dzong". Not only is it the best preserved fortress in Tibet, but it also offers beautiful views over the town and the Palcho Monastery.

Trekking enthusiasts have the option of going on several-hour or several-day excursions from Gyantse to explore the surrounding area's little-known monasteries.
