Turpan, also known as Tourfan or Turfan, is situated to the northwest of China in the autonomous Uyghur region of Xinjiang.

Summary:

A town that was once a major Silk Road trading post. This fertile oasis is known for its grapes that grow both within and around the town. It's also one of the hottest places in the country, with extreme seasonal temperature differences; during summer, the mercury can rise to 55°C, followed by glacial winters.

Apart from the town itself, there are numerous places to visit within a 50km radius of Turpan. A must-see are the ruins of Jiaohe. Nicknamed 'Town of Cliffs', it's wind-battered remains are spectacular. There are also the ruins at the the ancient town of Gaochang, the Astana Cemetary, the Flaming Mountains and the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves. You certainly won't get bored!
